How to use

  1. Set the frequency using the slider or a preset.
  2. Choose a waveform — sine, square, sawtooth or triangle.
  3. Adjust the volume and click Play to hear the tone.

What is this tool?

Frequency & Tone Generator uses the Web Audio API's oscillator to produce a precise, continuous tone at any frequency between 20Hz and 20kHz, in your choice of waveform. It's a browser-based alternative to a physical signal generator for quick audio testing tasks.

Common uses

  • Testing speakers, headphones or an audio system for frequency response
  • Tuning an instrument against a reference pitch
  • Basic hearing range checks
  • Generating a test signal for audio equipment troubleshooting

FAQ

What's the difference between the waveforms?

Sine is a pure, smooth tone with a single frequency. Square, sawtooth and triangle waves are richer in harmonics and sound more buzzy or edgy — useful for different testing purposes.

Is it safe to listen to high-frequency tones?

Keep the volume low, especially at high frequencies, since perceived loudness can be misleading and prolonged exposure to loud tones can damage hearing.

Why can't I hear very low or very high frequencies?

Human hearing typically ranges from about 20Hz to 20kHz, and this range narrows with age — frequencies near the edges may be inaudible or very faint even at higher volumes.
