What is this tool?

Background Remover uses an on-device AI segmentation model (via @imgly/background-removal, running on ONNX/WASM) to automatically detect the main subject of a photo and erase everything else, producing a transparent PNG. The model itself is downloaded once by your browser and cached for later use — your photo is never uploaded to a server at any point.

FAQ

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The AI model runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly — your photo is processed and never leaves your device.

Why does the first use take longer?

The AI model (a few dozen MB) has to be downloaded once. Your browser caches it after that, so future background removals are much faster.

Does it work on every kind of photo?

It works best on photos with a clear main subject, like people, animals, products or vehicles. Very cluttered scenes or subjects that blend into the background can be harder to segment cleanly.
